What's the best season to come to Bellevue?

Zanzibar experiences ideal holiday weather for most of the year. The heat of summer is seasonally often cooled by windy conditions, resulting in pleasant sea breezes, particularly on the North and East coasts. Being near to the equator, the islands are warm all year round, but officially, summer and winter peak in December and June respectively. This is illustrated statistical weather information shown below. Zanzibar is blessed with an average of 7-8 hours of sunshine daily!

Short rains can occur in November but are characterised by short showers which do not last long. The long rains normally occur in April and May although this is often referred to as the 'Green Season', and it typically doesn't rain every day during that time.

How does tidal change effect swimming in the ocean?

Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth. The tides occur with a period of approximately 12 hours and 25 minutes, and with an amplitude that is influenced by the alignment of the sun and moon and the shape of the near-shore bottom.

Tidal changes on the East-Coast of Zanzibar

Every 6 hours the tide changes from high to low tide. This means with low tide the water will be drawn back up to the reef which is about 1km away from shore. The dept of the water left in the ocean will depend on the positioning of the moon. Around full moon the water is completely drawn back up to the reef.

Around high tide you can swim everywhere. When the tide is going down you have a timeframe from around 3 hours around high tide to swim. When it's low tide there are always options to swim around lagoon area's close by or of course in our swimming pool.

How far are the villages Bwejuu & Paje?

We are located 1 km north of Bwejuu, it's very easy to walk to Bwejuu via the beach or the road side and it's worth doing so!

Paje is 5 km south from the guesthouse, by foot it's 1 hour or you can take a bike / dala dala or taxi.

For our Kiters staying at Bellevue: we run twice a day free transport to Paje (Kitecentre Zanzibar).

Where is Bellevue located?

Bellevue is located just 1km north of Bwejuu. On the road from Paje to Michamvi you will find the sign at the right side of the road.

Bellevue is situated on a rock, around 50m away from the beach. In front of the guesthouse is a private house.

To get to the beach you just walk down the steps, go left for 50m and go right for 50m and there you are.

The advantage from staying on this rock is a better view over the water, nicer colors plus you won't get annoyed from the flying sand and get a nice cool breeze in the evening! From the restaurant and most of the rooms there is a beautiful view on the ocean.

Surrounded by our lush green garden Bellevue is truly a hidden paradise!

The Wind

by Robert Louis Stevenson

I saw you toss the kites on high
And blow the birds about the sky;
And all around I heard you pass,
Like ladies' skirts across the grass

Oh wind, a blowing all day long,
Oh wind, that sings so loud a song!

I saw the different things you did,
But always you yourself you hid.
I felt you push, I heard you call,
I could not see yourself at all

Oh wind, a blowing all day long!
Oh wind, that sings so loud a song!

O you that are so strong and cold,
O blower, are you young or old?
Are you a beast of field and tree,
Or just a stronger child than me?

O wind, a blowing all day long,
O wind, that sings so loud a song!

Do you have a time schedule and information about the ferry?

Since the ferry accident of July 2012 we are getting questions if the boats are a safe form of transport. We hope you understand we can't give you any guarantees! What we can do is to inform you how our government is handling the current situation by giving you a link to the following website, with this you can keep yourself posted; http://www.usizame.org

Zanzibar may be reached by speedboat from Dar es Salaam (about 2 hours), daily departures. There are also several flights every day from Nairobi, Mombassa, Dar es Salaam, and Kilimanjaro Airport.

Sea ferries that still have a good reputation are: azam, fast ferries or seastar ferries (3 hours)
